FAQs

How are specialty certification standards developed?

The process involves multiple steps: Advisory commissions first draft standards for their specialty areas, then the TBLS board reviews them. After a public comment period, the board may make revisions before submitting them to the Texas Supreme Court for final approval.

Who evaluates certification applications?

Applications go through a two-step review process. First, an Advisory Commission of board-certified attorneys in that specialty area reviews and makes recommendations. Then, the TBLS board makes the final decision based on these recommendations.

How long does Board Certification last?

Board certification is valid for 5 years. To maintain it, attorneys must meet ongoing education requirements and recertify at the end of each 5 years, though we don't have to retake the examination.

How common is multiple Board Certification?

According to 2023-24 State Bar of Texas statistics, while 5,978 attorneys (5%) hold one certification, only 792 (1%) are certified in two areas, and just 99 attorneys (less than 0.1%) hold three or more certifications. There are only two attorneys in the entire State of Texas who hold TBLS certifications in Commercial Real Estate, Farm and Ranch Real Estate, and Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law simultaneously — and Stephen is one of them.
